Deepest Kindness Through Loss and Surrender
The kindest people are not born that way but are shaped through suffering.1 They are those who have endured life’s toughest trials, pulled themselves from the depths of darkness, and transformed every setback into a lesson. The kindest individuals have walked through profound pain and emerged with deep compassion to embrace others and become one with them.
The kindest people are tested by life in unimaginable ways—not by their choosing, but by the relentless force of life’s tragedies. A father buries the body of his only child, a woman whose body has been ravaged by illness, and a man who witnesses his entire world of relationships and possessions vanish in the aftermath of war or disaster. The mind perceives these as stories of suffering, yet something far deeper is at work beneath the pain.
Surrendering to Suffering Transforms it into Peace.
In the depth of suffering, when mind’s resistance dissolves and it surrenders to Inner Being, a sacred stillness emerges that is unshakable, and untouched by life’s turmoil. It is not the pain itself that transforms them, but their surrender to it. Their willingness to let pain burn away all illusion.
In suffering, these kind people do not break; they awaken. And through this awakening, they become vessels of the infinite love that underlies all things. They recognize that to meet the world with tenderness is not weakness—it is the highest form of strength.
They then realize that suffering is not the enemy. The real enemy is unconsciousness—the belief in a separate, isolated self.
From Suffering to Awakening
The mind believes suffering is a personal affliction, something unjust or cruel. But suffering is not "mine" or "yours"—it belongs to the human condition. It is the great purifying force that, when met with stillness, removes the illusion of separation. Those who have known deep suffering and remained present with it, come to see that pain is not a curse. Instead, it is a call to return to our true essence, God within.
When the mind ceases to resist, suffering transforms into awakening. The kindest people are those who have stood at the edge of despair and, instead of collapsing into it, have surrendered to it. In that surrender, something profound changes—a heart awakens, no longer seeking protection but existing as a true expression of love itself.
The kindest people do not wear their suffering as a badge of honor. They exude genuine humility. They have seen the worst of life, yet they choose to respond with love. Not because they must, but because they deeply know that nothing matters more than kindness in the face of suffering.

This article is inspired by a quote about "kindness" from author Bianca Sparacino in her book, A Gentle Reminder.
Very true Aby! It seems the worst brings out the best in us. No one loves the dark night of the soul but quite often later we are thankful for that experience.
