Intuition: Living Beyond Thinking
Ramana Maharshi taught: When you stop thinking, the divine power takes charge of your life, and you discover that the mind and thinking are unnecessary for functioning in the world.
He also said: When you stop identifying with your mind, whose only function is to keep thinking, you realize that happiness is your true nature.
In the same spirit, Nisargadatta Maharaj said: If you know you are not your mind, how will it matter whether it is busy or calm?
Now, you may be asking:
How to stop thinking?
How can I live without thinking?
Without planning for tomorrow? Without recalling the past?
Without weighing every decision? If I stop thinking, won’t I become careless, unproductive, even lost?
How do I raise children, build a career, or survive in this world without thinking?
Isn’t thinking what makes us human?
Which brings us to a deeper clarification:
The Difference Between Thought & Thinking..
Thought is spontaneous. It arises from nowhere, uninvited, like a ripple on the surface of still water. It’s not personal. It simply appears. Let it go once it arises.
But thinking…That’s where we get entangled.
Thinking is when we latch onto a thought—feeding it, spinning it, analyzing it, believing it.
And here’s the spiritual trap:
Most suffering doesn’t come from the thoughts themselves.
It comes from thinking about them.
You don’t suffer because of a thought.
You suffer because you believe the thought.
“Leave your front door and your back door open. Let thoughts come and go. Just don't serve them tea" — Shunryu Suzuki
In truth, thoughts are harmless until we begin to think them—identify with them, give them meaning, and weave them into our sense of self.
This simple shift changes everything:
Let thoughts come and go, like clouds in the vast sky of your being.
But don’t turn them into storms through thinking.
What Did Ramana Maharshi Really Mean by “Stop Thinking”?
When Ramana Maharshi says, “Stop thinking. Surrender the mind inward and dissolve it,” he doesn’t mean you walk around like a zombie with zero thoughts, unable to function in the world.
What he’s pointing to is something far more practical and deeply intelligent.
Practical Meaning (Without the Woo-Woo)
1. “Stop thinking” = Stop identifying with and personalizing every thought.
He’s not saying you shouldn’t have thoughts. He’s saying:
Thought is harmless unless and until you make it real by “thinking” about it.
Most people live thier life caught in their head 24/7—lost in inner voice, worry, judgment. Ramana invites you to stop taking interest in thoughts, let them go, and not become them.
2. “Surrender the mind” = Let go of compulsive control.
Surrender doesn’t mean you give up and do nothing. It means:
Trust something deeper than the mind to guide you.
It means resting in Being and let the silent power called God use your mind and body to fulfill its purpose in the world.
3. “Dissolve the mind” = Return to silence between thoughts.
There’s always a gap between two thoughts. Ramana points to that gap. It’s pure awareness without content. When you stay present in those gaps, thoughts naturally slow down, and you function from clarity, not chaos.
Activating Intuition from Being
Ramana is teaching: No thought, whether positive or negative, represents absolute truth. The purpose is to transcend (rise above) these thoughts by keeping your attention inward.
Once you keep your mind inward continuously, you will activate conscious thought, that is, intuition, to guide your life. As the intuition from your Being begins to operate within you, it will direct your mind and body toward your primary purpose, which is to awaken from the dream of thoughts.
The Difference Between Intuition and Thinking:
Origin:
Intuition arises when the mind surrenders inward to Being.
Thinking arises from the Ego when your mind is always focused outward.Flow:

Thinking often leads to destruction.Feeling:
Intuition feels peaceful.

Intuition arises from Love.

Thinking traps you in Separateness.
"Put your thoughts to sleep, do not let them cast a shadow over the moon of your heart. Let go of thinking" - Rumi
Can You Live Without Thought?
Not entirely. You need thoughts to:
Drive your car
Build your business
Raise children
Solve your problems
But the point is that thought is your tool. You need to use it, but instead, it is using you. Use it like a knife when needed, then put it down. Don’t let it cut you with stress.
Practical Way to Disidentify from Thought:
Try this short practice:
Sit still. Close your eyes for a minute.
Go into your Inner Body and feel the aliveness in your inner body
You may feel stillness and aliveness both at the same time. This is not a thought. That’s what Ramana meant by the gap between thoughts.
Whenever possible in your daily life, keep at least 50% of your attention on your inner body. If you get the chance, surrender 100% of your attention within. Anchoring yourself inside the inner body will completely transform your life.
Final Words
Ramana Maharshi is not asking you to reject the world. He’s inviting you to see through the illusion of the thinker, and rediscover the luminous peace of your inner true Self.
In that stillness, life flows with ease. Decisions become clearer. Compassion arises naturally. And you realize that you were never the mind. You are the light in which the mind appears and disappears.
