What does it truly mean to be spiritual?
Is it about following a set of rules, worshiping an external figure, or living in fear of divine punishment?
Or is it something deeper, more transformative, and profoundly liberating?
These questions lie at the heart of our exploration into spirituality vs. egoic fanaticism.
The Sacred Meaning of the Word “Religion”
The Latin roots of " religion " point us toward two interpretations. Both interpretations point to the same truth: the essence of religion is NOT found in dogma or rigid tradition but in the living experience of Oneness and presence.
The first root, "religare," means "to bind" or "to connect." At its essence, religion is not primarily about imposing rules or structures. It is about fostering a vertical connection with the inner Being–the God within. This connection dissolves the illusion of separateness and reminds us of our Oneness with the greater whole. Horizontally, it connects us with others, uniting us in the collective experience of Oneness.
The second root, "relegere" translates to "to read again" or "careful consideration." It involves surrendering again and again to our Inner Being and returning to the present moment. This practice allows us to feel and realize the divine within and cultivate the highest state of awareness.
When Religion Turns Into Egoic Fanaticism?
Religion turns into fanaticism when "my God" versus "your God" divides rather than unites. The ego clings to its version of the divine, fueling conflict, while the true essence of love and unity is forgotten.
Egoic Fanaticism is clinging to egoic beliefs of “my God vs. your God” that divide humans, forgetting our Oneness with others, which is at the heart of all religions.
Egoic Fanaticism is the form of religion that has lost its essence to awaken humans to their True Selves.
What is Spirituality?
"Spirituality is about awakening to your True Self—the divine within—and becoming One with the whole of existence, realizing that there are no others. It is to realize that we are not merely a mind-body complex but an eternal, deathless being."
We're not human beings having a spiritual experience. We're spiritual beings having a human experience. - Pierre Teilhard de Chardin
